Crispy, juicy, tender, and flavorful is how I would describe these chicken tenders. While it may be easier to go buy some frozen chicken tenders and heat them up in the oven.  This recipe has only a few simple steps and the result is worth the effort.

For these buttermilk chicken tenders I first soaked them in buttermilk for a few hours to tenderize the meat. I then breaded them with a panko bread crumb mixture which included some of my BBQ Chicken Rub to boost the flavor profile.  Instead of deep frying the chicken I opt to use the air fryer. This simple three step method leads to an extra crispy seasoned breading on the outside while maintaining a perfectly cooked moist chicken on the inside. I recommend serving the chicken strips with your favorite BBQ sauce on the side for dipping.

Being these are made in the air fryer there was very little added fat making them low calorie without sacrificing any flavor. I actually prefer making chicken tenders this way as opposed to deep frying them as you can achieve a crispy exterior without the breading becoming greasy.

These chicken tenders would be great as an appetizer or with some Crispy Oven Fried Potatoes.

Made in the air fryer these turn out super crispy

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lb 1.5 Chicken Tenders

  • 2 C 2 Buttermilk

  • Egg Wash
  • 3 3 Eggs

  • 1 t 1 Kosher Salt

  • 1/2 t 1/2 Garlic Powder

  • 1/2 t 1/2 Black Pepper

  • Breading
  • 1 C 1 Panko Bread Crumbs

  • 1 C 1 Plain Bread Crumbs

  • 2 T 2 BBQ Chicken Rub

  • Cooking Spray

Directions

  • Add chicken tenderloins and buttermilk to a zip top bag or sealed container. Allow to soak for minimum of 3 hours.
  • After 3 hours assemble egg wash by whisking together eggs, salt, pepper, and garlic powder in a medium bowl.
  • Assemble breading by combining panko bread crumbs, regular bread crumbs, and BBQ Chicken Rub.
  • Preheat air fryer to 375.
  • Remove chicken from buttermilk, add chicken to egg wash, and allow to soak until air fryer comes to temp. After air fryer has reached 375 coat each tenderloin in breadcrumb mixture, then add to air fryer basket coated in cooking spray. Coat the top of each tenderloin in cooking spray. ( Make sure to give each piece a little space, you might have to cook in batches depending on your air fryer.)
  • Cook for 6-8 minutes, or just until crust starts to brown. Flip chicken then coat 2nd side with cooking spray and cook until internal temperature reaches 165.
  • Once up to temperature, remove from air fryer, and serve with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • If you are cooking in batches you can place cooked strips in a warm oven. They will stay hot and crispy this way.
