French toast is one of my favorite things to make for breakfast.  There are lots of different recipes to make delicious French toast.  This is my version and it is loaded with enough flavor that you can skip the syrup. The trick to making good French toast is to use stale bread and lots of eggs.  This is a solid base to start with but you can add to it to make it your own by switching out the bread for a sweet bread or even using left over buns, just use what you have available.

Cinnamon Sugar French Toast

Ingredients:

  • 8          Slices of Bread
  • 4          Eggs
  • 1C       Whole milk or Cream
  • 2t         Nutmeg (fresh ground if possible)
  • 2T        Cinnamon Sugar (3 parts white sugar, 1 part cinnamon)
  • 2T        Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Powdered Sugar for Finishing
  • Butter to Finish

Directions:

  1. Remove bread from packaging and place on a wire rack the night before you plan to cook.
  2. Next morning beat eggs and milk until full combined.  Add in nutmeg, cinnamon sugar, vanilla extract, and pinch of salt stir to combine.  The dried ingredients will need to be stirred between each dunk of the bread.
  3. Heat skillet to medium heat. (I used an electric skillet and set it to 325)
  4. When skillet has come up to temp dunk stale bread into the milk egg mixture and allow it to soak in before flipping and saturating other side.
  5. Evenly place each piece of bread onto skillet and cook until golden brown on first side then flip and cook until golden brown.
  6. Remove cooked French toast and place on a warmed plate, top each piece with a light dusting of powdered sugar and a pat of butter.
